Capacity depends on the correction level, not the pixel size: roughly 2,953 characters at L, 2,331 at M, 1,663 at Q and 1,273 at H, because higher correction spends more of the code on redundancy. Size only changes how large the same code is drawn.

What happens to your data

The code is drawn in your browser and handed to you as a data URL; the text you encode is never sent anywhere. Bear in mind the opposite risk, though — whatever you encode is plainly readable to anyone who scans the finished code, so a QR is a container, not a secret.

Decide first whether the destination is fixed, because this makes static codes: the address is baked into the pattern, so a code printed on a thousand flyers points there forever, and a changed link means a reprint. There is one text field and no separate Wi-Fi or contact mode, so those codes work only if you type the payload the way the standard writes it, WIFI: and BEGIN:VCARD blocks included. How it works

Toolvore renders the QR code in your browser — the code is drawn on your device and the content you encode is never uploaded. That's important when the QR contains a private link or Wi-Fi password. The image redraws on every keystroke and on every change of size or level, so there is no generate step, and the download is a PNG of black modules on opaque white with the quiet-zone border included — cropping that pale margin is what breaks a printed code most often. The size list is a target rather than a limit: a payload dense enough to need a 177-module grid arrives 740 pixels wide whatever you chose, because a module is never drawn smaller than four pixels. There are no colour, logo or vector options.

How much data can a QR code hold?

More than most people need, and less than a long URL suggests. Tested here with the library this page uses, plain single-byte text tops out at 2,953 characters at the L level, 2,331 at M, 1,663 at Q and 1,273 at H — the more error correction you ask for, the less room is left for your content. Past the ceiling no image appears, only the message 'The amount of data is too big to be stored in a QR Code'. Long before that it becomes impractical: every extra character adds modules, and a 177-square grid needs either a large print or a patient camera.

What does the error correction level actually change?

QR codes store redundant copies of their data so a scuffed or partly covered pattern still decodes, and L, M, Q and H set how much redundancy goes in. That redundancy shares the grid with your content, so raising the level makes the code denser: https://example.com/my-page comes out as a 25-module grid at L, 29 at M and Q, and 33 at H. Denser means smaller squares at any given printed size, which can cost more scans than the tolerance wins back. M suits most work; choose Q or H for packaging, outdoor signage, or a code with a logo dropped over its centre.

How small can a QR code be printed and still scan?

Physical size decides it, not pixel dimensions. A camera has to resolve each module, so what matters is how small one square lands on paper. The usual print guideline is a ratio of about one to ten between the width of the code and the distance it will be read from — a code scanned at arm's length can be a couple of centimetres across, one read from the pavement cannot. Keep the pale border that comes with the image, put it on something matte and flat rather than glossy or curved, and test the printed sheet with an ordinary phone, not on screen.

Can I tell how many people have scanned a QR code?

Not from the code. The pattern is a container for a string of characters with no way to report anything back, so nothing about a scan reaches you. Counting happens at the destination: point the code at a link you control, a short link or a page with campaign parameters, and read the numbers there or in your site analytics. Two caveats. Anyone who reaches the same address by typing or clicking it elsewhere is counted alongside your scanners unless the printed code gets an address of its own, and some apps fetch a preview of a link, which registers as a visit nobody made.

Does a QR code have to be black on white?

It has to be dark on light, and inverting that is the fastest way to make a code that will not scan. Readers look for dark modules against a lighter background, and while many now cope with a light-on-dark code, enough do not that a printed run is a gamble. Colour is allowed within the same rule — a dark navy or deep green on a pale ground scans about as well as black — but low contrast, a busy photograph behind the pattern, or a light module colour will all fail on some phones and work on yours, which is the worst way for it to fail.
