PDF Tools

Merge, split, and extract from PDF files. 14 tools

PDF is the format people are asked for and rarely have to hand. These tools cover the everyday jobs — turning photos or screenshots into a document, pulling pages out of one, putting several together, straightening a scan that opens sideways, and getting text or images back out again.

Every tool here works on the file inside your browser using pdf-lib or pdf.js, so contracts, invoices and ID documents are never uploaded. The practical limit is your device's memory rather than a file-size cap or a queue.

What to know before you pick one

Why a PDF and not a folder of photos

A PDF fixes the order of pages and the position of everything on them, which is the whole reason forms, applications and portals ask for one. Send three photos of a document and the person at the other end has to work out which page comes first and how to rotate each one; send a PDF and that decision is already made. It also opens the same way on a phone, a laptop and a printer, because the layout travels inside the file rather than depending on the program that opens it.

Merging, splitting and reordering are the same job

People arrive looking for a merge tool and often need a split, or the reverse. Both are page-level operations: nothing inside a page is redrawn, the pages are simply written into a new file in a new order. That is why they are quick even on a large document, why nothing is re-compressed, and why the text stays selectable afterwards. If you need pages from two files interleaved, split each one first and then merge the pieces.

A scan that opens sideways is not damaged

Rotation is stored as an instruction attached to each page rather than baked into the image, so a sideways scan is a correct page with the wrong instruction. Fixing it rewrites that instruction, which is why it is instant and loses nothing. The same is true in reverse: a page can look upright in one viewer and sideways in another if the viewer ignores the instruction.

Getting the text back out

Whether text can be extracted depends on how the PDF was made. One exported from a word processor carries the characters themselves, so extraction is exact. One produced by a scanner or a camera holds a picture of the page, and there are no characters in it to find — that needs optical recognition, which reads the shapes and guesses. If a tool returns nothing from your file, that is usually the reason, not a fault.

Why nothing here has a file-size limit

Every tool on this page does its work inside the browser tab using your own device, so there is no server paying for storage or bandwidth and therefore nothing to ration. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory, not a plan. It also means a contract, an invoice or a passport scan is never transmitted, which matters more for this category than most — these are the files people are most reluctant to hand to a stranger.
