PDF N-up
Put 2, 4, 6 or 9 PDF pages on a sheet with paper, margin and order controls plus a page map.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
Put 2, 4, 6 or 9 original PDF pages onto each output page locally, preserving proportions with explicit paper, spacing and reading-order controls.
How to use it
- 1Choose a PDF and select paper size, orientation and pages per sheet.
- 2Set row-first or column-first order, margins, gaps and content alignment.
- 3Review the schematic map, then create the PDF and optional JSON layout record.
- 4Print the exported PDF at actual size without applying another multiple-pages setting.
Example
- Input
- 5 pages; four-up; across rows
- Output
- Output 1: [1,2]/[3,4]. Output 2: [5,blank]/[blank,blank].
Every source page appears once. Three remaining cells are intentionally empty.
What happens to your data
PDF N-up arranges the selected file in this browser without uploading its contents. Generated PDFs and JSON maps download locally. Review them before sharing; local processing is not a redaction guarantee.
Last updated October 2026
Combine 2, 4, 6 or 9 original PDF pages onto each page of a new PDF. Create compact presentation handouts, arrange small reference pages for printing, or send someone an already-laid-out document without asking them to find a printer-specific multiple-pages setting.
N-up keeps ordinary reading order across a grid; it does not pair outer and inner pages for folding. Use the separate PDF Booklet Maker when the paper will be folded into a booklet.
How it works
Load one local PDF and choose the paper size, portrait or landscape orientation, pages per sheet, margin, gap and alignment. Two-up uses one row and two columns, four-up uses two by two, six-up uses three rows by two columns, and nine-up uses three by three. The same grid applies in either paper orientation.
Across rows places pages left to right before moving down. Down columns fills the first column from top to bottom, then moves right. For five pages in a four-up row-first layout, the first output page contains [1,2] above [3,4], and the second contains page 5 plus three unused cells. Column-first four-up puts [1,3] above [2,4]. Every source page appears once and only once. Unused cells stay visually empty rather than printing a blank label.
Each source page's visible CropBox, limited to its MediaBox, is fitted independently inside a cell with its existing 0, 90, 180 or 270 degree rotation. Centre, top-left and bottom-left alignment control unused space inside the cell. Aspect ratio is preserved: there is no stretching, automatic content reflow or cropping to fill. Smaller source pages are not enlarged unless selected. A cell must have at least 10 PDF points of width and height after margins and gaps.
The downloaded file embeds original PDF content, not page screenshots. Text and vector artwork are not deliberately rasterized; images already stored as pixels remain pixels. Browser thumbnails are only optional source previews and do not determine export resolution. They display at most eight occupied cells of the selected output page. Use the complete page map and inspect the downloaded PDF as the print proof.
Inputs are limited to 25 MiB and 300 pages, with a 50 MiB output limit. Supported target papers are A4, A3, US Letter and US Legal; margins and gaps use 0–100 mm. Encrypted or damaged PDFs, non-standard UserUnit pages, detected forms, signatures/certification and annotated or linked pages are rejected. Use a separately exported ordinary flattened unsigned PDF where appropriate. Document-level features such as bookmarks, attachments and layers are not preserved, and the result is not guaranteed to retain source accessibility structure.
The JSON download records the source-page count, output dimensions, grid, slot positions and fitted page placements. It contains no original text, source filename or source-file fingerprint. It is a layout record, not a backup of your file. Changing the file or any export setting removes the previous download until you build again. Processing stays in browser memory; this tool does not upload your PDF. Retained PDF resources may include material outside the visible crop, so imposition is not secure redaction or sanitization.
Print the completed N-up PDF at actual size with one output page per physical side. Do not select another multiple-pages setting, or each already-reduced page will be reduced again. Verify your printer's non-printable margins and the legibility of small text; a technically correct nine-up handout can still be too small to read.
Worked example: Five pages become two four-up handout pages
- Input
- 5 source pages · 4 pages per sheet · across rows
- Result
- Output 1: [1, 2] / [3, 4] Output 2: [5, blank] / [blank, blank]
The slash separates rows. Every original page appears exactly once; three unused cells on the second page are left empty.
Common use cases
- Creating compact slide handouts as a shareable PDF
- Putting small reference pages on larger paper
- Giving a print shop an explicit row- or column-first page layout
- Inspecting mixed-size pages before a batch print job
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between N-up and a PDF booklet?+
N-up lays pages in a reading-order grid. A booklet uses outside/inside page pairs so the order works after double-sided sheets are folded. These are different arrangements; use PDF Booklet Maker for folding.
Does four-up always mean two rows and two columns?+
Yes here. Two-up is 1×2, four-up is 2×2, six-up is 3×2 and nine-up is 3×3. Rotating the target paper changes cell dimensions, not the grid definition.
Will small pages or landscape pages be distorted?+
No. Every page fits proportionally inside its cell using its visible crop and existing right-angle rotation. Empty space remains when the shapes differ. Enlargement is off by default; no automatic rotation is added to maximize area.
Is this better than choosing multiple pages in my printer?+
It solves a different delivery need: the layout is saved into a new PDF that can be reviewed or shared consistently. Your printer's built-in N-up option may be sufficient if you only want to print once. Do not apply both at the same time.
Are links, forms, signatures and PDF bookmarks preserved?+
Forms, detected signatures, annotations and links cause rejection. Bookmarks and other document-level features are not copied into the output. Keep the original document and use an ordinary unsigned flattened copy for printing.
Can the tool handle confidential PDFs?+
The layout runs locally and the tool does not upload PDF contents. Confidentiality still depends on your device, source files and how you handle the downloaded PDF. This is not a sanitization or redaction tool.
