AVIF to JPG
Convert still AVIF images to JPG locally, choose a transparency background and download a batch ZIP.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
AVIF to JPG makes a compatible JPEG from an 8-bit SDR still AVIF, with quality, transparency-background and maximum-edge controls, plus individual or ZIP downloads.
How to use it
- 1Select still 8-bit SDR AVIF images within the displayed limits.
- 2Choose JPEG quality, background and original dimensions or a smaller maximum edge.
- 3Convert, inspect the preview and actual size, then download each JPG or Prepare ZIP.
Example
- Input
- 1,600 × 800 AVIF; maximum edge 640
- Output
- 640 × 320 JPG
JPEG is lossy, and transparent areas use the selected background.
What happens to your data
AVIF headers, browser decoding, JPEG export and ZIP creation run on your device. The source image and filename are not uploaded by the conversion workflow.
Last updated October 2026
Convert a still AVIF into a JPG that an older upload form, office application or photo editor can open. Choose JPEG quality, a background for transparent areas and an optional maximum edge, then save individual images or a batch ZIP. The conversion happens on your device, without uploading the source photographs.
AVIF can store transparency and high dynamic range; an ordinary JPEG cannot preserve those features. This tool accepts 8-bit SDR still images, rejects animation and detected high-bit-depth or PQ/HLG HDR sources, and flattens supported transparency onto the background you select. It is a compatibility conversion, not a way to recover detail or an archival HDR workflow.
How it works
Before native decoding, the converter reads the AVIF file-type brands and bounded image properties. It checks the primary image dimensions and every declared raster property against 12 million pixels and 8,192 pixels per side. Each input is limited to 10 MiB; choose at most 20 images and 50 MiB per batch. A misleading extension, invalid container, unsupported animation or oversized raster produces a file-specific error. The browser must also be able to decode the actual AVIF payload.
JPEG quality ranges from 1 to 100 and follows the browser encoder. Even 100 is a lossy JPEG setting. Transparent pixels are drawn over your selected background before encoding, so choose white for a white document or the destination's background color for a website. Maximum edge reduces the longest side while keeping the aspect ratio; it never enlarges a smaller source. A 1,600 × 800 input becomes 640 × 320 when you choose a 640-pixel edge.
Review the preview and actual byte count before downloading. JPEG can be larger than a well-compressed AVIF. Files process sequentially, successful files remain downloadable when another fails, and combined results are capped at 60 MiB. Prepare ZIP includes only successful images, with flat cleaned filenames and numbered duplicates. Replacing a file, changing settings, clearing or cancelling discards previous exports.
The exported JPEG does not retain the AVIF container, original metadata, original bit depth or color-profile metadata. Browser color handling can affect the rendered appearance, especially with wide-gamut sources. Keep the original AVIF when those properties matter, and use a color-managed desktop workflow for archival conversion.
Worked example: Make a still AVIF fit an older uploader
- Input
- 1,600 × 800 8-bit SDR AVIF; maximum edge 640
- Result
- 640 × 320 JPG
Aspect ratio is retained; JPEG adds a lossy encoding step.
Common use cases
- Opening downloaded AVIF photos in software that requires JPEG
- Preparing a product photo for an older marketplace uploader
- Creating named JPEG copies of a small AVIF folder
- Choosing an opaque background for transparent AVIF artwork
Frequently asked questions
Why convert AVIF to JPG if AVIF is already smaller?+
Compatibility is the main reason. The receiving application may accept JPEG but reject AVIF. If it already accepts AVIF and the image looks right, keeping the original avoids another lossy save.
Will JPG quality 100 make the conversion lossless?+
No. JPEG quality 100 is still a JPEG encoding setting, not a guarantee of identical pixels. Choose AVIF to PNG when you need to avoid another lossy output format, while remembering that browser decoding and any resizing still affect the result.
What happens to transparent AVIF pixels?+
JPEG cannot store transparency. The tool paints your chosen background first, then draws the AVIF over it. The resulting JPG is opaque.
Can this convert animated or HDR AVIF?+
No. AVIF sequences, 10/12-bit images and PQ/HLG HDR declarations are rejected. Export a still 8-bit SDR version in a suitable editor first. This tool does not perform an archival HDR-to-SDR tone map.
Why does a valid AVIF fail in my browser?+
AVIF features and decoder support differ by browser. A damaged payload, unsupported feature or unavailable decoder can fail after the header passes. Try an updated browser or re-export a standard 8-bit SDR still AVIF.
Are my AVIF photos uploaded?+
No. Header checks, native decoding, JPEG encoding and ZIP creation happen in this browser. Temporary previews are released when you clear, replace or leave the page; download the results you want to keep.
