The exam timetable goes up and the question stops being what your mark is and becomes what it has to be. One assessment is still ahead of you, it carries half the module, and the arithmetic that decides whether the grade you want is still reachable sits on the syllabus in a form nobody enjoys reading. A weighted average does not behave like a plain one, which is why working it out in your head goes wrong.

Before typing anything, work out which kind of grading your course uses. Weighted categories give each block a fixed share of the final mark — coursework 30%, midterm 20%, final 50% — whatever number of pieces sit inside it. Points-based grading has no shares at all: everything is worth a number of points, and your grade is points earned over points available. Both fit the same two columns, but the second needs translating — each item's percentage goes in the score box and its points available in the weight box, and the proportions still come out right even though the weights will not total 100.

The mistake to avoid is entering a zero for work that has not been marked. Blank and zero are different claims: blank means not yet graded and is held out of your current standing, while zero means you sat it and scored nothing. Fill the rows ahead of you with zeros and the page will tell you, correctly, that you are failing.

How it works

Toolvore multiplies each marked score by its weight, adds the products, and divides by the weight that has actually been marked rather than by the full total — which is why a half-finished term still reports a sensible number. Anything left blank is set aside as pending, and its weight joins the pool the target works against: the score you need is the weighted points your target implies across the whole module, less what you have banked, spread over the weight still outstanding. Two limits are worth knowing before you rely on it. The letter beside your percentage comes from one fixed scale, 97 for an A+ down to 60 for a D−, with no institution's own cut-offs, GPA points or degree classifications applied over the top, so read it as a rough label rather than as what will land on your transcript. And nothing is saved: close the tab and the rows are gone. Only the target you set survives, because it is the one value written into the page address.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a weighted grade by hand?

Multiply every mark by its weight, add the products together, then divide by the weights you used rather than by the number of assessments. A 90 on something worth 25%, a 68 on another 25% and a 75 on a 50% exam gives 2,250 plus 1,700 plus 3,750, which is 7,700 — divided by 100, that is 77%. A straight average of the three marks would have said 77.7, and the gap widens as the weights get more lopsided. If only part of the course has been marked, divide by the weight marked so far, otherwise you are counting work you have not done yet as a zero.

What score do I need on the final to get the grade I want?

Multiply the overall mark you are aiming for by the total weight of the module, subtract the weighted points you have already earned, then divide what is left by the weight still outstanding. With 78 banked across a marked 50%, and a 50% final ahead of you, an 80 overall needs 8,000 points, minus the 3,900 already earned, over 50 — so 82 on the exam. Two results are worth reading closely. Anything above 100 means the target is out of reach without extra credit, and anything at or below zero means you have secured it even if you score nothing.

Do the weights have to add up to 100%?

No, and the reason matters. The sum runs proportionally, so weights of 3, 2 and 5 behave exactly like 30, 20 and 50 — what counts is each item's share of the total, not the total itself. That is what lets a points-based syllabus work here: an assignment out of 40 points and an exam out of 200 go in as weights of 40 and 200. When the figures do not reach 100 a note says so, because the usual cause is a row not entered yet rather than a different grading scheme. An assessment given a weight of zero is ignored on both sides of the calculation.

Is 78.8% a C+ or a B−?

On the scale used here it is a C+. The bands run 97 and above for an A+, 93 for an A, 90 for an A−, 87 for a B+, 83 for a B, 80 for a B−, and onwards in the same pattern to 60 for a D−, with anything lower an F. That is the common American arrangement, and it is the part your own institution is most likely to differ on: plenty of departments start a B at 82 or 85, some drop plus and minus entirely, and a UK degree classification — a first at 70 — maps onto none of it. Check the handbook before treating a letter as final.

Does an assignment I have not handed in count as a zero?

It depends on whether it has been marked, and this is the distinction to get right. Work still ahead of you belongs blank, so it stays out of your current standing and instead joins the weight your target has to be earned across. Work you missed and were given nothing for is a genuine zero and belongs in the box as 0, where it pulls the average down by its full weight. School gradebooks treat this differently — many show unsubmitted work as a zero immediately, which makes a mid-term grade look far worse than the marked work alone justifies.

Are my marks stored, uploaded or shared anywhere?

They stay in the tab. Every row you type — assessment names, scores and weights — lives in the page's own memory, is never sent anywhere, and is not written to storage or kept between visits; reload and you are back to the starting rows. The one value that travels is the target percentage, which is written into the address bar when you change it from the default, so a link you copy carries the grade you were aiming for and nothing about how you are doing. That cuts both ways: the address is safe to paste into a message, but the page cannot restore your marks for you afterwards.

How does dropping the lowest score work?

Many courses drop the lowest quiz before the average is taken, and it moves things more than people expect when that item sits in a small category. Model it by removing the row entirely and letting the rest of the category share the weight between them — since everything is proportional, deleting one of several equal quizzes redistributes it on its own. What the page will not do is apply the rule for you: nothing inspects your scores to decide which one to discard, so where a syllabus drops two, or drops only within one category, working out which rows go is yours to do.

Why does the figure here differ from my online gradebook?

Usually one of three things. The gradebook may be counting unsubmitted work as a zero while you have left it blank, which is the largest single source of the gap. It may be running a points-based total across the whole course rather than weighted categories, and those two agree only when every category happens to be proportionate to its points. Or the rounding differs: percentages here are shown to one decimal place, and a course that rounds 89.5 up to an A while another truncates to 89 produces an argument every term. Where the two disagree by more than a rounding step, look for a missing row rather than a broken sum.
