AVIF to PNG
Convert supported still AVIF to PNG locally with transparency, individual downloads and a batch ZIP.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
AVIF to PNG exports supported still 8-bit SDR AVIF pixels and transparency as PNG, with optional resizing and batch ZIP downloads.
How to use it
- 1Choose still SDR AVIF artwork; animated and high-bit-depth sources are rejected.
- 2Keep Original dimensions or set a smaller maximum edge.
- 3Convert and review transparency and output size, then download a PNG or the successful batch ZIP.
Example
- Input
- 80 × 40 transparent AVIF; maximum edge 640
- Output
- 80 × 40 transparent PNG
Smaller images are never enlarged; original precision and metadata are not retained.
What happens to your data
AVIF parsing, native decoding and PNG creation happen locally in this browser. Download the temporary results before clearing or leaving the page.

Create a PNG from a still AVIF when you need a widely supported image for an editor, a presentation or a form that will not accept AVIF. Supported transparency remains transparent, and Original dimensions avoids a resize. For a folder of small images, review each result and download the successful files together as a ZIP.
PNG stores the decoded output pixels without another lossy compression step. It cannot restore detail already lost in a lossy AVIF, and it may be much larger. This converter is designed for 8-bit SDR still AVIF images. Animated, high-bit-depth and detected PQ/HLG HDR sources are rejected rather than silently flattened or presented as a faithful HDR conversion.
How it works
The tool validates AVIF brands, box boundaries and declared image dimensions before asking the browser to decode. Limits are 10 MiB per source, 20 files and 50 MiB per batch, with no more than 12 million pixels or 8,192 pixels per side in a declared raster. These checks bound ordinary decoding work; malformed or browser-unsupported payloads can still produce a clear per-file error.
Original dimensions keeps the decoded image size. A maximum edge rescales the longest side down, preserves the aspect ratio and rounds the other side to a whole pixel. Resizing changes pixels before PNG encoding, so leave it at Original dimensions when an exact-sized source is important. An 80 × 40 image stays 80 × 40 even when the maximum edge is 640. There is no upscaling or background-removal step.
Supported AVIF alpha becomes PNG alpha. A checkerboard in the preview indicates transparency; it is a preview background and is not added to the downloaded PNG. Browser canvas decoding can normalize colors and precision, and the original AVIF container, ICC metadata, EXIF and camera data are not copied. The exported PNG is not a metadata-preserving archive of the original.
The actual before/after sizes show when the PNG grows. Batch output is capped at 60 MiB: reduce dimensions or process fewer images if necessary. Failed sources are listed separately and never included in the ZIP. Cleaned duplicate names receive numeric suffixes. Any input or settings change removes outdated exports; cancellation prevents a delayed result from appearing as the current one.
Worked example: Keep small transparent artwork at its original size
- Input
- 80 × 40 transparent, 8-bit SDR AVIF; maximum edge 640
- Result
- 80 × 40 PNG with transparency
The smaller image is not enlarged. Alpha is checked in the downloaded file.
Common use cases
- Importing AVIF artwork into an editor that needs PNG
- Keeping supported transparency while making a compatible copy
- Avoiding another lossy save before image editing
- Converting a small set of AVIF assets into an organized PNG ZIP
Frequently asked questions
Is AVIF to PNG lossless?+
The PNG encoding is lossless for the pixels produced by this browser canvas. That does not guarantee identical original AVIF precision, metadata or color rendering. Resizing changes pixels, and a lossy source cannot regain discarded detail.
Does AVIF to PNG preserve a transparent background?+
Yes, supported decoded alpha is retained. The checkerboard shown behind the preview does not become part of the downloaded PNG. If the source is opaque, converting it does not create transparency or remove a background.
Why is the PNG larger than the AVIF?+
AVIF commonly compresses images efficiently, while PNG stores the decoded raster losslessly. A larger output is expected for many photographs and does not mean that extra detail was recovered.
Does this export a 10-bit or HDR PNG?+
No. This workflow accepts 8-bit SDR still AVIF and exports the browser canvas result. High-bit-depth and detected PQ/HLG HDR sources are rejected. Use a suitable color-managed image application when you need those properties.
Can I batch convert AVIF to PNG?+
Choose up to 20 images within 10 MiB each and 50 MiB total. Convert, review the results, then Prepare ZIP. Successful outputs remain available individually if packaging fails.
Does PNG preserve my AVIF camera information?+
No. The tool writes rendered pixels and does not copy the original AVIF metadata or profiles. Keep your source file if camera, location, copyright or archival information matters.
