Image Contact Sheet

Arrange JPEG and PNG images into an ordered contact sheet with labels and a local PNG download.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.

Image Contact Sheet arranges up to 24 still PNG or JPEG files into one ordered PNG with adjustable thumbnail cells, spacing and optional filename labels.

How to use it

  1. 1Select supported still images within the displayed limits.
  2. 2Check their order, then choose columns, thumbnail size, spacing, labels and background.
  3. 3Create the sheet, inspect the preview and download its PNG.

Example

Input
3 images; 2 columns; 16 × 16 cells; 2px spacing; no labels
Output
38 × 38 PNG

Thumbnails fit without cropping; the final row has an empty cell.

What happens to your data

The browser checks the source containers, decodes thumbnails and draws the PNG locally. Filenames appear in the image only when labels are enabled. Inputs and filenames are not uploaded by this workflow.

Make a contact sheet from a small set of photographs, screenshots or artwork so someone can review the selection in one image. The sheet follows the file order shown in the tool, with controls to move an image earlier or later and remove unwanted entries. Optional numbered filename labels connect the thumbnails to their originals.

Choose the number of columns, thumbnail dimensions, spacing and background, then export one PNG. A contact sheet is a visual index: it creates smaller representations inside a shared canvas, so retain the source files for full-resolution editing or delivery.

How it works

Choose up to 24 still PNG or JPEG files. The entire selection is checked before it becomes the current batch: a damaged, animated or unsupported file produces an error instead of disappearing silently from the sheet. Each source is limited to 10 MiB, 12 million pixels and 8,192 pixels per side; the selection is limited to 50 MiB and 32 million decoded pixels combined. PNG accepts supported bit depths through 8-bit. GIF, APNG, WebP, HEIC, SVG, 16-bit PNG and compound JPEG are outside this workflow.

Thumbnails fit within the requested cell without cropping. Portrait and landscape images therefore leave different amounts of empty space. Small sources may be enlarged to fit, but that does not create new detail. The sheet fills cells from left to right, then continues on the next row. Up to eight columns are supported; an incomplete last row keeps the same overall width. Spacing also becomes the outer margin. Labels add a 28-pixel strip below each thumbnail and shorten long names with an ellipsis. The full names remain visible in the ordering list.

The final canvas is limited to 12 million pixels and 8,192 pixels per side. For example, three 16 × 16 thumbnails in two columns with 2-pixel spacing and labels off create a 38 × 38 PNG. Review the preview before saving, especially when using transparent backgrounds: the checkerboard is only a preview aid. Label color is independently adjustable so text remains readable against your chosen destination.

Image checks, browser decoding and PNG encoding happen on your device. Changing the selection, order or settings invalidates the old download. Clearing or leaving the page releases temporary preview URLs. The PNG contains rendered pixels and any labels you enabled, so filenames deliberately become visible content when labels are on. Original metadata and profiles are not copied, and browser color handling can affect appearance. Use Image Resizer for individual image dimensions, Image Border for one image with margins, or Image Splitter to export separate grid tiles.

Worked example: Create a compact two-column index

Input
3 images; 2 columns; 16 × 16 thumbnails; 2px spacing; labels off
Result
38 × 38 PNG contact sheet

The last row contains one thumbnail and one empty cell.

Common use cases

  • Reviewing a selected group of product photographs in one image
  • Comparing screenshots while retaining their order and filenames
  • Preparing an artwork selection sheet for a discussion
  • Creating a local visual index of a small image folder

Frequently asked questions

How do I control image order in the contact sheet?+

The displayed list is the export order. Use Move image earlier or Move image later to change it, or Remove to omit an image. The PNG fills each row left to right before moving down. Reordering removes the previous download until you regenerate.

Will the contact sheet crop my photos?+

No. Every image fits inside its thumbnail rectangle while keeping its aspect ratio. Unused space uses the chosen sheet background. A small source can be enlarged, which may look softer.

Can I make a transparent contact sheet?+

Yes. Enable Transparent sheet background to leave margins and unused cells transparent. Labels are still drawn in the selected label color. The checkerboard appears only behind the preview and is not saved in the PNG.

Are full filenames included in the exported labels?+

Labels are numbered and shortened to fit a single line. The on-page order list shows complete filenames. If filenames contain private information, turn labels off or rename the source files before generating a sheet.

Can I export a PDF or preserve every original pixel?+

This tool exports one PNG contact sheet and scales images into thumbnail cells. Use Images to PDF for a PDF workflow and keep the original image files when their full resolution matters.
