Brick Calculator
Estimate single-leaf bricks from wall area, openings, brick and joint sizes, allowance and whole packs.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
Estimate bricks and whole packs for one brick leaf using measured wall/opening areas, actual brick face dimensions, separate joints and your chosen allowance.
How to use it
- 1Choose metric or US units; enter one wall and combined opening area.
- 2Enter brick face dimensions, vertical/horizontal joints, allowance and supplier pack size.
- 3Calculate and review required bricks, whole packs, pack surplus and assumptions.
- 4Download the JSON estimate; editing an input removes stale results.
Example
- Input
- 5 × 2 m wall, 1 m² openings, 215 × 65 mm brick face, 10 mm joints, 5% allowance, 400/pack.
- Output
- 560 bricks required; 2 packs containing 800 bricks; 240 extra from pack rounding.
Single-leaf modular area estimate, not a structural design or cutting plan.
What happens to your data
The calculation runs locally. Measurements are not uploaded or saved; the optional JSON file contains your active measurements and assumptions.

Brick quantities depend on the face dimensions you actually lay, the mortar joints between them and the wall area that remains after openings. A fixed bricks-per-square-metre rate hides those choices. This brick calculator exposes them: enter one wall face, subtract a measured total for doors and windows, specify the brick face and both joint dimensions, then choose your own allowance and supplier pack size.
The output separates estimated need from the quantity a whole-pack order buys. It shows the module, its derived bricks-per-m² rate, the unrounded requirement, whole bricks, whole packs and pack surplus. Use it for a single brick leaf with one repeated exposed face. It does not turn an area calculation into a course-by-course bond layout or certify a wall's design.
How it works
The calculation converts wall dimensions to metres and the exposed brick face and joints to millimetres. Gross area is wall length × wall height; combined opening area is subtracted once. The module is (brick face length + vertical joint width) × (brick face height + horizontal joint height). Dividing 1,000,000 by that module area gives a rate per square metre. Net area multiplied by that rate gives the base estimate.
For example, a 215 × 65 mm exposed face with 10 mm joints has a 225 × 75 mm module, or about 59.259259 bricks/m². This is a derived area rate, not an instruction to order exactly that number for every square metre. Edges, cuts, corners and bond details matter. Manufacturer setting-out tables distinguish boundary conditions with different numbers of end joints; those conditions are not reconstructed from a single area input.
The chosen allowance multiplies the unrounded base count by 1 + allowance/100. The tool rounds that requirement up to whole bricks once, then rounds up to supplier packs. Enter a pack size of 1 when purchasing individual bricks. Zero allowance is accepted; the example's 5% only demonstrates arithmetic and is not a site-specific recommendation.
Decimal inputs and the defined foot/inch conversions use exact fractions internally, so an exact whole-pack boundary is not increased by binary floating-point error. Display values may be rounded to six decimals; the JSON report keeps the entered measurements and the exact required-brick fraction. This arithmetic accuracy does not eliminate uncertainty in measurements, product tolerances or construction waste.
Worked example: A single leaf with an opening and whole-pack rounding
- Input
- 5 × 2 m wall; 1 m² openings; 215 × 65 mm face; 10 mm vertical and horizontal joints; 5% allowance; 400 bricks/pack.
- Result
- 9 m² net area; 560 bricks after allowance; 2 packs = 800 bricks; 240 bricks extra from pack rounding.
One-leaf area estimate. The 5% allowance and 400-pack size are example choices, not universal recommendations.
Common use cases
- Compare two actual brick face sizes and see how their modules affect a single-leaf ordering estimate.
- Subtract non-overlapping door and window areas before applying your selected breakage/cutting allowance.
- Compare supplier pack sizes while keeping the required count and extra pack surplus separate.
- Save an auditable JSON quantity note with dimensions, units, formula assumptions and whole-pack rounding.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks per square metre does this calculator use?+
It derives the rate from your brick face and joints rather than assuming a universal rate. A 215 × 65 mm face with 10 mm joints gives 1,000,000/(225 × 75), approximately 59.259259 bricks/m² before allowance. Other dimensions produce a different rate.
Does this work for double-skin walls or English and Flemish bonds?+
Not as a complete wall estimate. This version represents one leaf with a repeated exposed face. Different leaves, headers, piers, returns and special units need a bond-specific takeoff. Do not assume doubling an area result accounts for every structural or bond detail.
How should I subtract doors and windows?+
Add their measured areas in the selected square unit and enter the combined total. Count only non-overlapping openings entirely inside this wall. The tool checks that the total is smaller than gross wall area, but it cannot verify placement or calculate reveals, lintels and cut bricks around an opening.
Why does my order contain more bricks than the required number?+
Required bricks include your percentage allowance and are rounded up once. Supplier packs are then rounded up separately. The extra-from-pack-rounding field is purchased bricks minus required whole bricks; it is not an additional hidden waste allowance.
Can it calculate mortar, foundations or wall strength?+
No. Brick frogs, perforations, wall depth, joint profiles and losses affect mortar, while structural safety involves entirely different inputs. This tool does not specify mortar mixes, foundations, ties, reinforcement, load capacity or compliance. Follow product instructions and obtain qualified design advice where needed.
What are the supported units and limits?+
Metric mode uses metres for the wall, m² for openings and millimetres for brick faces/joints. US mode uses feet, ft² and inches. Changing modes clears measurements so values are not silently reinterpreted. Plain decimals allow six decimal places; wall area is capped at 100,000 m², face sides at 10–1,000 mm, joints at 0–50 mm, and purchases at 10,000,000 bricks or 1,000,000 packs. These are software limits, not recommended construction dimensions.
Are the wall measurements uploaded?+
The estimate is computed locally in the browser; entered measurements are not uploaded or saved by the calculator. Its optional JSON download contains your inputs and assumptions. Editing any input removes the previous result and download until you calculate again.
