Add visible page numbers to a PDF while controlling which pages are numbered. Skip a cover, number an appendix, select odd or even pages, or provide a custom range. Choose a starting number, one of six page positions, and a plain or labelled style. The browser creates a separate numbered PDF; the original remains unchanged.

Printed page numbers and PDF page positions are different. If the first sheet is a cover and the next is the beginning of a report, select the report pages and start at 1. The added sequence advances only over the selected pages. This tool adds visible text; it does not rewrite the PDF reader's logical page labels or update a table of contents.

Rotated and cropped pages need special treatment. A number placed at the bottom of an unrotated page's coordinates can appear on the side of a landscape page or outside a cropped page. Placement here takes the PDF's declared quarter-turn rotation and visible crop box into account. The placement illustration shows the chosen position and label, not your document's content; inspect the downloaded PDF to check for overlap.

How it works

The PDF is read locally, and each selected page receives a text stamp at the chosen visible position. Text size is adjustable from 6 to 48 points and margin from 8 to 100 points. Starting values range from 0 to 999999. Five styles are available: a number, number of final number, Page number, Page number of final number, or a number between dashes.

The denominator in an 'of' style is the final number in the new sequence, not the source document's total page count. Numbering three selected pages from 5 yields 5 of 7, 6 of 7 and 7 of 7. If a numbering run begins at 1, the denominator equals the number of selected pages. Existing footer text is not erased, so choose an empty position and suitable margin. Changing any setting invalidates the old download.

Files are limited to 25 MB and 2,000 pages. Encrypted or damaged files may be refused. The operation does not deliberately rasterize pages, but rewriting a PDF can affect signatures and uncommon document features. Review both the preview and final saved copy.

Worked example: leave the cover unnumbered

Input: A four-page PDF. Skip the first page, start at 1, style: Page number of final number.
Result: Cover unchanged; original pages 2, 3 and 4 show Page 1 of 3, Page 2 of 3 and Page 3 of 3.

The PDF viewer still has four physical pages. This adds visible text, not logical page labels.

How do I add PDF page numbers starting on the second page?＋

Open the PDF, skip the first page and set the start number to 1. Preview the placement, then create and download the numbered copy. The cover remains unchanged.

Can I number only selected pages?＋

Yes. Choose all pages, odd pages, even pages or a custom range. The sequence increments only over selected pages. Selections use physical page positions, not the numbers already printed in the document.

What does the total mean in the 1 of N style?＋

It is the final value in the added numbering sequence. Three selected pages starting at 1 end at 3; starting at 5 ends at 7. The total does not automatically equal the number of pages in the original file.

Does this handle rotated landscape PDF pages?＋

Placement accounts for declared rotations of 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees and the visible crop box. The placement illustration is a schematic, not a rendered page. Check representative pages in the downloaded PDF, especially if the document has unusual geometry.

Can it replace old page numbers or update the table of contents?＋

No. It adds new visible text and does not recognise or remove an existing footer. It also does not update bookmarks, logical page labels or a table of contents.

Will the edited PDF keep a valid digital signature?＋

Do not assume that it will. A signature covers document bytes; editing and saving can invalidate it. Keep the signed original when that authenticity is required.
