Image Border
Add measured borders around JPEG and PNG images without resizing the original image area.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
Image Border expands a still image with independently sized solid or transparent pixel margins and exports PNG without resizing the decoded source.
How to use it
- 1Choose one supported still PNG or JPEG.
- 2Enter top, right, bottom and left pixel margins; choose solid color or transparency.
- 3Create the border, check the final dimensions and download the PNG.
Example
- Input
- 7 × 5 PNG; top 1, right 2, bottom 3, left 4
- Output
- 13 × 9 PNG
The source starts at (4, 1) and keeps its 7 × 5 decoded size.
What happens to your data
Margin painting and PNG export happen on a local browser canvas. Source images are not uploaded, original metadata is not copied, and replacing an input or changing a setting releases the previous preview download.

Add a solid-color or transparent border around a still image, with a separate pixel width for the top, right, bottom and left sides. The tool expands the canvas around the source; it does not scale the source to make room for a frame. Download the result as a PNG so supported transparency remains available.
Unequal margins are useful when a screenshot needs extra room above or below, a product image needs a consistent outer frame, or transparent artwork needs breathing room before it is placed in a layout. The border is added outside the original image, and existing transparent areas inside it stay transparent even when the new border is solid.
How it works
Open one still PNG or ordinary 8-bit JPEG within 10 MiB, 12 million pixels and 8,192 pixels per side. Header and container checks run before browser image decoding. Animated PNG, compound JPEG, 16-bit PNG and unsupported formats such as GIF, WebP, HEIC and SVG are rejected. Convert those files to a supported still image first; selecting a single animation frame is not part of this tool.
Enter whole-pixel margin values, including zero on any side. Output width equals source width plus left and right margins. Output height equals source height plus top and bottom margins. For a 7 × 5 image with top 1, right 2, bottom 3 and left 4, the PNG is 13 × 9 and the source starts at x=4, y=1. The original image is drawn once at its browser-decoded dimensions. Positive margins add space; they do not crop or cover the original.
Choose Border color for solid added margins, or enable Transparent border to leave those new pixels empty. The color is painted only in the added margins, so a transparent hole or edge inside the original stays transparent. The checkerboard is a viewing aid and never becomes part of the downloaded PNG. A border whose color matches the page may be difficult to see in the preview; the reported output dimensions still show the added canvas area.
Both the source and the enlarged output must fit the pixel and edge limits. Browser decoding can apply image orientation and color conversion, and export does not preserve the original metadata or profiles. PNG adds no lossy output compression, but this is not a byte-preserving archival operation. Changing any margin, color or transparency option removes the previous result so it cannot be mistaken for the current settings. For a resized source use Image Resizer first; use Crop Image to remove surrounding content or Image Contact Sheet to arrange several images on one canvas.
Worked example: Add four different margins without resizing
- Input
- 7 × 5 PNG; top 1, right 2, bottom 3, left 4 pixels
- Result
- 13 × 9 PNG; source begins at (4, 1)
The source retains its decoded 7 × 5 size and supported alpha.
Common use cases
- Adding a precise frame around a screenshot for a document
- Leaving transparent space around a logo before placing it in a layout
- Creating extra space below an image without stretching it
- Adding consistent pixel margins to a single product photograph
Frequently asked questions
Does adding an image border resize the photo?+
No. The tool expands the canvas and draws the decoded image at its original dimensions. Width grows by the left and right margins; height grows by the top and bottom margins.
Can I make the border transparent?+
Yes. Enable Transparent border and download the PNG. The added margins have zero alpha. An application with a white background may make them appear white, but that background is not stored in the PNG.
Will a solid border fill transparent parts of the original?+
No. Solid color is painted only outside the source rectangle. Existing transparent pixels inside the image remain transparent. This is a border tool, not a background-flattening operation.
Can I add a border on only one side?+
Yes. Set the other three sides to zero. Any side accepts a nonnegative whole-pixel value as long as the finished image remains within 12 million pixels and 8,192 pixels per side.
Why is a JPEG border download a PNG?+
PNG supports transparent margins and avoids a further lossy JPEG encoding step. The browser still decodes the original JPEG, so lost source detail cannot be restored and the PNG may be larger than the JPEG.
