PDF Booklet Maker
Arrange PDF pages for folded booklets with blank padding, binding choice and a sheet map.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded, never stored, and never leaves your device.
Arrange a PDF into a local folded-booklet print layout with blank padding, binding choice and a downloadable sheet-side map.
How to use it
- 1Load one ordinary PDF and choose paper, binding, margin and centre gap.
- 2Inspect the front/back page map and any padding blanks.
- 3Create and download the booklet PDF and optional JSON map.
- 4Print one already-arranged page per side at actual size; test your printer's duplex/feed settings first.
Example
- Input
- 6 pages; left-bound; both sides
- Output
- blank|1, 2|blank, 6|3, 4|5 — four output sides on two sheets
The missing seventh and eighth positions are blank. The output is already imposed; do not apply Booklet again when printing.
What happens to your data
PDF Booklet Maker processes your file locally in browser memory. This tool does not upload PDF contents; the downloaded PDF and sheet map remain on your device. It is not secure redaction or a sanitization guarantee.

Turn a normal reading-order PDF into a folded booklet layout. The last and first pages share the outer front sheet, the second and second-to-last share its back, and the remaining pages nest inside. Download the arranged PDF and a separate sheet map before sending anything to the printer.
This is saddle-stitch imposition for a single folded stack, not a PDF merger or a page reorder that leaves one original page on each sheet. It is useful for short event programmes, zines, instruction booklets and classroom handouts.
How it works
Choose one ordinary PDF, a physical paper size, left or right binding, an outer margin and a centre gap. The output paper is landscape. Each original page fits proportionally inside half the sheet, after margins and the gap. Larger pages shrink; smaller pages stay at their original size unless you enable enlargement. Mixed visible page sizes are handled individually, and existing right-angle rotations are respected.
A folded sheet has four page positions: two on its front and two on its back. The tool therefore pads the end of the source with blank positions until the count is divisible by four. An eight-page left-bound booklet has sheet 1 front [8,1], back [2,7], then sheet 2 front [6,3], back [4,5]. A six-page source follows the same map with blank positions instead of pages 7 and 8. Right binding swaps the two positions on every side. Blank positions have no printed label.
Both sides exports front then back for each physical sheet, starting with the outer sheet. Front-only and back-only exports keep ascending physical sheet order. They do not decide how your printer collects or refeeds paper. Check the complete map and run a one-sheet print test: feed direction, reverse order and duplex flip settings depend on the printer. Print the generated PDF at actual size, with one output page per sheet side. Do not enable booklet mode again in the print dialogue.
Page content is embedded as PDF content, so original vector lines and text are not deliberately rasterized. Existing raster images remain raster images and may look soft when enlarged. This does not repair fonts, tagging or source accessibility. The new document does not preserve bookmarks, attachments, layers, document actions or other document-level features. PDFs with detected forms, signatures/certification, annotations or links are rejected: export an ordinary flattened unsigned copy and keep the original. Encrypted or damaged PDFs and non-standard UserUnit pages are unsupported.
The admitted file limit is 25 MiB and 300 pages; output is capped at 50 MiB. Paper choices are A4, A3, US Letter and US Legal. Margins and centre gap use millimetres from 0 to 100, and must leave a cell of at least 10 PDF points in each dimension. The schematic preview shows positions, not a final print proof. Optional original-page thumbnails load locally only after you select them. The JSON map lists page positions, dimensions and fitted placements without the original text, filename or a source-file fingerprint. Keep it with the source if you need to reproduce a job.
File contents stay in this browser; the PDF is not uploaded by the tool. Input and layout changes invalidate old downloads. A new file or Reset prevents a delayed file read or build from replacing newer work. Cropping and embedding are not secure redaction: hidden source content or shared resources may remain in the PDF. Large stacks need creep compensation, separate signatures and finishing advice, which this tool does not provide.
Worked example: Six reading-order pages become a two-sheet booklet
- Input
- 6 source pages · left binding · both sides
- Result
- Sheet 1 front: blank | 1 Sheet 1 back: 2 | blank Sheet 2 front: 6 | 3 Sheet 2 back: 4 | 5
Two empty positions are appended to make eight positions. The output contains four landscape PDF pages: one for each printed side.
Common use cases
- Preparing a short zine or event programme for folding
- Making a two-sided classroom booklet from a normal PDF
- Checking missing blank pages before printing
- Sharing an explicit sheet-side map with a print operator
Frequently asked questions
Why does a six-page booklet have blank positions?+
One folded sheet carries four original page positions. Six source pages require two sheets, or eight positions. The last two positions stay blank so the printed reading order remains correct.
Should I enable Booklet again when printing the result?+
No. The downloaded PDF is already imposed. Print one output PDF page per sheet side at actual size on matching paper. Applying Booklet or multiple-pages mode again rearranges or shrinks the already-arranged result.
Which duplex flip setting should I choose?+
There is no universal setting across every driver and manual-feed path. Landscape, short-edge duplex is a common starting point, but follow your printer's instructions and verify one sheet before a full job. The tool does not control your printer.
Are PDF links, annotations and fillable fields retained?+
No. Those inputs are rejected rather than silently dropping interactive content. Flatten or export a separate ordinary unsigned copy first. Bookmarks and other document-level features are not carried into the new layout.
Can I use this for a thick professionally bound book?+
This is a single-stack folded booklet tool, not a professional signature planner. It does not calculate paper thickness, creep, trim, bleed or binding tolerances. Ask a printer about those requirements.
Does local processing make the output a sanitized PDF?+
No. Local processing means this tool does not upload the file. It is not malware scanning or secure redaction, and retained PDF resources may contain information outside the visible crop. Only process files you trust and review exports before sharing.
