This tool sends your query through our server to look up live data. We don't store it, and no files are ever uploaded — though the upstream service answering the lookup sees the query too.

How to use it

Rows are omitted rather than left blank, so a sparse database entry produces a shorter list. The location is a registry guess about your ISP's address block, not GPS — on mobile networks it can name a city hundreds of kilometres from you. If the geolocation service is unreachable the response still carries your IP, with a note that location is temporarily unavailable, so the address is the one field you can rely on.
What happens to your data
Your address is not read from the page at all: our /api/ip route uses the client address our host reports, falling back to the last public entry of the x-forwarded-for header, and checks it really is an IP address before using it. That address is then sent to ipapi.co, a third-party geolocation service, so this tool does share your IP off-site. The call is made with cache: no-store, so Refresh always produces a live answer, and nothing is written to a cookie or to local storage.

Something has asked for your IP address, and the number you can find is probably the wrong one. A support agent needs it before they can allowlist you. A forum has banned an address and you want to know whether it is yours. Or a site keeps insisting you are in the wrong country.
Settle one thing before you read the page. There are two addresses in play and only one of them means anything outside your own home. The one your laptop reports in its network settings — 192.168.1.14, 10.0.0.5, something beginning 172.16 — was handed out by your own router and repeats in millions of households, which makes it useless to anyone on the other side of it. The address the rest of the internet sees belongs to the router, is shared by every device behind it, and is the one a ban list or an allowlist means.
The location that comes with it is a different kind of thing, and if a location is what you actually need, this is the wrong instrument. It describes the block of addresses your provider was allocated rather than the device in your hand: about right on a home line, and on a mobile network sometimes hundreds of kilometres out. Read it as a guess rather than a measurement, or you will decide your VPN has failed when it has not.
How it works
Toolvore reads the address off the connection itself, because your browser does not know it — the request arrives at a server and the server reports where it came from. On the hosting platform that means a client-connection header the platform sets and overwrites itself, which is the one that cannot be forged. Where it is absent, the route falls back to the x-forwarded-for chain and walks it from the right, taking the first public address it finds, because proxies append to that header rather than replacing it and the left-most entry is whatever the caller typed. The address is the solid part; everything under it is not. City, region, postal code, coordinates, timezone and network name all come from one call to ipapi.co, so if that call fails you still get your address and a note that location is unavailable. Empty rows are dropped rather than shown blank, and the coordinates row is hidden whenever either figure is zero — a genuine longitude of 0 vanishes with it.

What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?+
Private addresses are reserved for use inside a network: anything in 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x or 172.16 through 172.31, plus 127.0.0.1 for the machine itself. They are not routable across the internet, which is why the same 192.168.1.1 sits in millions of homes at once. Your router holds one of those on the inside and a public address on the outside and translates between them, so every device in the house appears to the outside world as one address. That is why a phone and a laptop on the same wifi produce identical results here.
Why does my IP address keep changing?+
Most home connections get a dynamic address: the provider leases one from a pool and can hand you a different one when the lease renews or when your router reboots. Some providers change it daily, others leave it in place for months, and no setting on your side decides it. That is why anything meant to be reached from outside — a home server, a camera, a remote desktop — is normally paired with a dynamic DNS name that updates itself rather than a hard-coded address. A fixed address is usually a paid extra.
Can someone find my home address from my IP address?+
Not from the address alone. A public lookup returns registration and routing data about the block your provider owns, so it names an area or a city, and it often points at the equipment the address is routed through rather than anywhere near you. Your provider does hold the link between an address, a time and a subscriber, but releases it under legal process, not to whoever asks. The larger everyday leak is not the number: it is the location permission you granted a site, or a photo carrying GPS coordinates in its metadata.
Why is the city shown for my IP address wrong?+
Because the database describes a block of addresses rather than you. Providers buy addresses in ranges and register them against an office or a regional hub, so everyone on the range inherits the same point on the map. Mobile networks are the worst case, since traffic can surface at a gateway in another city or country entirely. Business lines routed through a head office land wherever that office is. If the wrong location is causing a practical problem, such as content being blocked, the fix is to change the address you appear from rather than to correct the database.
Does checking my IP address here send it anywhere?+
Yes, to one place, and it is worth knowing which. Your address is never read from inside the page; the server takes it from the connection your request arrived on. It is then sent to ipapi.co, a third-party geolocation service, to get the city, timezone and network name back, so this does share your IP off-site with that one provider. The call is made with caching switched off, so Refresh always produces a live answer rather than a stored one. Nothing is written to a cookie or to local storage.
Why does my IP address have colons in it instead of dots?+
That is IPv6, written as up to eight groups of hexadecimal separated by colons, such as 2001:db8::1. The four billion or so IPv4 addresses ran out, and IPv6 is the replacement with room to spare. Most connections now carry both, and which one appears depends on the family your browser chose for that request, so the same line can report a dotted address one moment and a colon-separated one the next. When someone asks for an address to allowlist, give them the family the service actually uses — the two are treated as separate addresses.
How do I check whether my VPN is actually hiding my IP address?+
Note the address and the country before you connect, then look again once connected. An unchanged address means traffic is not going through the tunnel at all. A different address in the country you picked is the basic pass, but two things leak around it. DNS requests may go to your provider's resolver instead of the VPN's, which reveals which sites you visit even though the traffic is encrypted. And WebRTC, the technology behind calls made in a browser, can hand a page a local or real address through a separate channel.
Why is my IP address blocked when I have done nothing?+
Addresses are recycled and shared, so reputation attaches to a number many people have used. The address on your home line today may have belonged last month to somebody sending spam from it. On mobile networks and some providers, thousands of subscribers share one public address through carrier-grade translation, so a single person's behaviour follows everyone on it. VPN and data-centre ranges are widely listed for being what they are. Restarting the router long enough to pick up a new lease sometimes clears it; where it does not, only the site can lift the block.
