How these free online tools work
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. 131 of the 163 tools do their work inside the page itself, using your own device's processor. The file you choose is never sent to us, which also means there is no copy of it for us to keep, leak or delete.
Is it really free, and what is the catch?
Free, with no account and no trial. There is no file-size ceiling or daily limit to upsell you past, because the work happens on your machine rather than on servers we would have to pay for.
Which tools do send data, and how do I know?
15 tools need a live lookup — a DNS record, an exchange rate, a WHOIS registry — and 17 send your text to an AI provider. That is 32 of 163. Each one says so on its own page, above the input, before you type anything into it.
How many tools contact nobody at all?
130. The gap between that and the 131 browser tools is two that fetch a recognition engine from a public CDN the first time you use them — the engine comes down, your image never goes up.
What is the largest file I can put through?
There is no limit we impose, because there is no upload to meter. The real ceiling is your device's memory: a phone will struggle with a 500-page PDF that a laptop handles without noticing. If a large file stalls, close other tabs and try again — nothing was sent anywhere, so nothing is stuck mid-transfer.
Why does a tool sometimes pause the first time I open it?
A few tools need a piece of machinery that is too large to ship with every page — an OCR engine, an image model. It downloads once, then stays cached, so the second use is immediate. The pause is that download, not your file being processed elsewhere.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Every tool is built for a small screen first, and because nothing uploads, a slow connection only affects loading the page once — not the work you do on it.
Do the tools keep working offline?
Most do. Once a page has loaded, the browser-based tools have everything they need, so they carry on working if your connection drops mid-task. Recently opened pages are kept for reuse, so a tool you used yesterday will usually still open with the network off.
What happens if I close the tab in the middle of something?
The work is gone and nothing is left behind. There is no draft on a server to resume from and no half-finished file in anyone's queue, which is the same property that makes the privacy claim true — it cuts both ways, and this is the direction where it costs you something.
Can I use these for work, or with a client's documents?
Yes, and the browser-based ones are the reason people do. A contract or an ID document processed on your own machine never becomes someone else's copy. For the tools that do send data — the lookups and the AI ones — treat them the way you would treat any third-party service, and check the note on the page first.
Do you track what I do with the tools?
We measure which tools get opened, so we know what to improve — through Umami, which your browser contacts at cloud.umami.is. The contents of what you type or the files you pick are never part of that; they never reach us in the first place. It sets no cookies, which is why this site has no cookie banner.
How is this different from the big PDF and image sites?
Mostly one architectural choice. The established services upload your file, do the work on their servers and delete it later, which is why they can offer things a browser cannot and why they have file-size tiers to sell. Here the work happens where the file already is. That is better for anything confidential and worse for anything enormous — pick accordingly.
Which browsers does it need?
Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on desktop or mobile. A handful of the heavier tools lean on newer browser features and will say so rather than failing quietly.
